ACCOUNTING MANAGER

Company and Position Overview:

Maine Woods Company (MWC) is one of the largest hardwood lumber producers in the Northeast and is an affiliate of Seven Islands Land Company (SILC) serving as a key component of the ownership’s vertically-integrated strategy.  SILC is one of the most well-respected names in forest management and is a multi-generational, family-owned company that manages over 820,000 acres of forest in Northern and Western Maine, owned by the Pingree Family since 1841.  SILC is looking for an Accounting Manager who will be responsible for managing the accounting and finance functions for MWC which is a full-time, salaried-exempted, and mid-level manager position.  The position will report directly to SILC’s Chief Financial Officer (CFO) and have cross-accountability to MWC’s General Manager (GM).

The position can work at SILC’s offices in Bangor, Maine or at MWC’s offices in Portage, Maine, with remote work opportunities. 

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Directs and manages the accounting and finance functions, which include the following areas:
    • Cash management, accounts payable (including approving payables and EFT payments), accounts receivable, payroll and fixed assets
    • Month-end closing process, including review of journal entries, account reconciliations and supporting schedules
    • Sales tax returns, 1099s, and property tax filings
  • Supports CFO, GM and other executives in completing special projects, ad-hoc reporting and strategic analysis as requested
  • Prepares budgets and forecasts
  • Prepares monthly GAAP-basis financial statements, reporting packages, KPI dashboards, and budget-to-actual analysis
  • Works collaboratively with the CFO and GM in maintaining strong internal controls over financial reporting and segregation of duties
  • Manages insurance policy renewals, claims and certificates
  • Coordinates the gathering and delivery of financial information needed for auditors

Required Minimum Education, Training and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting or related discipline
  • Designation of CPA preferred
  • At least 7+ years of experience in the field of accounting with manufacturing experience a plus

Qualifications:

  • Strong understanding of GAAP, financial reporting and financial analysis
  • Working knowledge of accounting software and systems such as Quickbooks or Great Plains
  • Excellent organizational skills, flexibility, and the ability to set priorities
  • Work accurately with close attention to detail
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to prioritize and juggle concurrent demands
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Word and other Microsoft products
  • Maintain confidentiality of sensitive information
  • Experience with preparing information for audits

Physical Requirements:

  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer
  • Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds
  • Occasional travel required
