Systems Engineer

Position Overview

The Systems Engineer is responsible for the design and implementation of internal systems, including hosted databases and 3rd party applications, telephony systems (VOIP, traditional communication systems, voicemail systems, mobile networks, and vendor specific hardware and software), as well as providing technical assistance to team members with system network requests.

Job Description

Role and Responsibilities

  • Responsible for the overall design and implementation, installation, configuration, and ongoing usability of desktop and laptop computers, peripheral equipment, telephony systems, servers, storage, networking, and software
  • Resolution of all service issues, resolve aging and complex issues
  • Troubleshoot and resolve emergencies with minimal oversight, persevering until resolved
  • Email management for all users using MS Outlook 365
  • Work with outside vendor representatives to resolve software and hardware issues
  • Install and/or upgrade Microsoft Server Operating Systems when needed
  • Knowledge of MS SQL and Crystal Reports
  • Perform advanced virus, malware and ransomware support and mediation
  • Configure and install firewalls (security appliances) to best-practice standards
  • Provide quality server room management
  • Resolve backup issues and perform restore testing
  • Utilizing Carbonite or other backup systems, as appropriate
  • Communicate with internal stakeholders and customers as required, keeping them informed of incident progress, notifying them of impending changes or agreed upon outages
  • Follow all defined processes and standards
  • Participate in project planning, solution delivery, mentoring and teaching improved processes to team members
  • Data retrieval and reporting for various people in the company using Crystal Reports
  • Maintain physical inventory of hardware and peripherals
  • Prepare annual budget of hardware purchases, software licenses and technical support
  • Explore the cost/benefit of new technology investments/hardware and software improvements and make recommendations to senior leadership 
  • Communication and updating of database policies and procedures
  • Takes part in after hours as needed
  • All other duties assigned

Qualifications and Education Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in IT or similar course of study OR equivalent combination of education and work experience
  • A minimum of 2 years as a Systems Engineer or similar role, working in Microsoft Environments
  • Strong understanding of Windows 2016/2012/2008 servers, Active Directory, SQL, Sharepoint, O365, Backup Technologies, Internet/DNS/E-mail/Communication issues, MS Access, Crystal Reports, and VPN
  • Documented relevant training and certifications
  • Demonstrated effective communication, both orally and in written form, of technical information with a wide variety of individuals and groups
  • Awareness of security applications and procedures
  • Knowledge of VoIP, voicemail, analog, and vendor specific hardware/software
  • Excellent problem solving and client / customer relationship skills
  • Ability to learn and retain new technology skills and troubleshooting processes, team player, maintain calm and present yourself professionally in high stress situations.

Physical Requirements:

  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds, twist and reach (for installations)
  • May need to access ladders, move self in various positions in confined spaces to access equipment, spaces may be dusty
  • Occasional travel is required, generally day trips only
  • Expectation of physical presence in the office
