Company History, Philosophy & Business
Seven Islands Land Co. is a forest land management company
based in Bangor, Maine. It was
formed in 1964 to carry on the conservative long-term management philosophy of
the Pingree family which began its ownership and management of private forest
land in the mid-1800’s. The
company is a subsidiary of Pingree Associates, Inc.
The primary function of Seven Islands Land Co. is growing
wood and managing natural resources. It
does not own timberland or mills. The
company provides a range of planning and management activities needed to conduct
a stable, continuing forestry business – one guided by the objectives of its
clients:
To protect land ownership rights
as well as land and timber values;
To protect aesthetic values;
To provide an after-tax return
that is comparable over the long-term with competitive uses of capital;
To manage the lands as a
commercial forest, to provide for multiple use of the forest; and
To increase utilization per acre
and to develop new markets for forest products.
Seven Islands manages nearly one million acres in Western
and Northern Maine. Clients, in
addition to the Pingree family, include other individuals and companies.
Seven Islands provides a full spectrum of forest management services
including silviculture, timber cruising, surveying, mapping and forest inventory
analysis, road building, harvesting and scaling, consulting, recreation,
research, record maintenance and public relations.
Much of the company’s strength lies in its skilled staff
and the staff’s commitment to careful, on-site supervision of all forest
activity. Five-year plans are
formulated for each district and constantly reviewed to ensure that forest
management goals are being achieved. Forest
management programs are designed to accelerate tree growth, improve tree quality
and increase utilization of all species and products.
Seven Islands Land Company’s long-term forest management
objective is a well-structured forest – one that has a balance of trees of
various ages, sizes and species. We
work continuously at upgrading areas which are not fully productive.
The company explores all new marketing opportunities, especially those
that will use material which needs to be removed to better condition the forest
for faster growth of high quality species.
Seven Islands Land Co. believes that all uses of the forest are important and
that all can be accommodated through proper management. Public use of
private land for recreation has grown tremendously over the years and people
management is an important aspect of forest management. Although
management of wildlife populations is primarily a function of the State, Seven
Islands is necessarily involved in habitat management and other wildlife issues.
The company works with others concerned about the proper use and management of
forests, the creation of new markets and the discussion of appropriate policies
affecting the resource.
